The homeowners of our Richmond Casually Classic project loved their home but wanted a design refresh to open their living space, and to add a classically modern feel to their home. In this Richmond home renovations project, we did just that — and the homeowners now have a more open, inviting space better suited for entertaining guests or just relaxing with the family.

Richmond Home Renovations: A Classic Kitchen

The kitchen is the focal point of this home, so we modernized the space and opened it up to be more accessible to the rest of the main floor. We removed the small section of wall separating the kitchen and dining areas, creating a spacious great room. To create a subtle distinction between the kitchen and living areas of the new space, we installed a ceramic tile mimicking wood in the kitchen, and natural hardwood in the living area.

To brighten up the new combined kitchen-dining-living space, we installed new floor to ceiling windows along the entire back of the house, giving unobstructed views of the private backyard, and allowing more natural light. The new windows are framed with wood stained in the same colour as the floor and kitchen island. The existing kitchen ceiling was flat and unexciting, so we created depth and dimension with a coffered ceiling.

In the kitchen itself, we enlarged the island, installed a flat-top cooking surface, a modern glass range hood, and seating for three comfortably. We also created a smaller auxiliary kitchen behind sliding doors off the main kitchen. The homeowners can cook in the smaller kitchen and close the doors to prevent cooking odors from entering the main living area.

Exterior Home Updates

The exterior of the home was also refreshed. The siding was upgraded in lighter colour, and red brick was replaced with creek stone. The landscaping was also updated to give the yard a clean, refreshed look. The outdoor living area is finished off with its new glulam beam deck cover, making the area usable year round.

The family is pleased with their new family home and now have a more classically modern home that better meets their needs. If you’re thinking of doing Richmond home renovations, give the team at My House Design/Build team a call and share your vision of the perfect home. We’ll make it happen!
